Our Solution
The solution is remarkably simple – voter registration records need to be augmented by voter controlled metadata about the election preferences, such as allowable forms, terms, and conditions of contact. In deference to the essential character of communication and engagement of the electorate these preferences may need to be reset every election cycle, which, while initially appearing burdensome, may perhaps become a vehicle for improving the election process and once again propelling the United States to the vanguard of the democratic experiment.
In fact, in contrast to the rhetoric of the current Republican front runner, and the ultimate source of the hate speech which led to the unfortunate events of this case, I would like to extend an olive branch to the aggrieved party and invite them to sponsor exactly the legislation required to protect the electorate from unhinged and dangerous individuals threatening to resurrect ideologues from the darkest chapters of human history and cloak their hate under cover of the First Amendment.
Had such legislation existed when I first approached the Iowa State’s Attorney, when I tried to hire a personal attorney, when I tried to persuade NationBuilder, when I contacted Maryland law enforcement, when I contacted many state and national Republican parties – had that legislation existed I might have been able to block the torrent of hate speech Assistant U.S. Attorney Radics referred to as “essentially junk mail” and which left me seeking medical attention, with a resting pulse rate over 100, and living in fear of my life in the mountains having severed all contact save the targeted and persistent stalking of a particular Republican campaign.
Had that legislation existed I might not have received a fake, pre-voted, second ballot along with claims that my first, mail-in, expatriate ballot had been rejected and I now had a chance to correct my vote.
Rather than join the battle and the Republican calls to root out vermin, I would like to extend an offer of negotiation and peace. I am certain that I must bear some weight for the events that transpired, but perhaps, by working together, we can take this opportunity to forge something constructive from these events. Without seeking absolution, let us nevertheless find a way to use this situation to adapt the laws and sculpt the character of our nation for the mutual benefit of future generations, whatever their political affiliation.
